SCHOOL KITS FOR KIDS
Ten Thousand Villages in Glen Ellyn sponsors an annual school kit collection for the Mennonite Church at this time each year. St. Benedict has joined in these efforts for many years now and donates a lot of bags each September. These bags get shipped to children in third world countries that wouldn't be able to go to school without the needed school supplies. We're well on our way to our "usual" giving of 200 Thanks to all who have donated!
If you can help with sewing the bags, here are the specifics (see samples in parish hall):
• approximately 11" x 16" (closer to 12" to better accommodate supplies)
• sturdy material with 1" folded down casing for drawstrings
• double draw strings which pull from both sides/opposite directions (thick shoe laces make good drawstrings)
Please bring in sewn bags as they are completed.
If you don't sew, please consider donating material and drawstrings for others to sew! We'll be collecting the bags until the middle of September, so please remember to pick up some supplies when you run out to the store (there should be lots of sales again now that most schools have started back).
Each bag needs:
. 4 unsharpened pencils
. 1 plastic metric ruler
. 4 spiral notebooks (about 70 pages)
. 1 thick pink eraser
. 1 package 12-16 colored pencil
We'll collect bags & supplies during August and September.
Please bring in supplies and finished bags as they're completed and put in the collection boxes in the parish hall.
This year, School Kits for Kids is asking that crayons not be included in the kits, as they tend to melt during the shipping process. All bags and supplies should be in by mid-September. Contact Carol Shelton for more information.
